Utah licenses electricians statewide. The journeyman-level credential is the Journeyman Electrician License, issued by the Utah Department of Commerce — Division of Professional Licensing. It requires at least 8,000 hours of experience.

How electrical licensing works in Utah

Utah’s Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) issues five individual electrician licenses: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. Each has a distinct scope and qualification route. Electrical contracting uses separate E200 General Electrical and E201 Residential Electrical business classifications.

Choose the credential for the work you will perform and the role you will hold. An individual electrician license does not by itself license a contracting business. E200 requires a master electrician; E201 accepts a master electrician or residential master electrician. A business entity names a qualified individual who exercises material authority in its contracting operations.

Apprentice Electrician License License

Scope of work: Learn and perform electrical work under an appropriately licensed master, journeyman, residential master or residential journeyman. Nonresidential immediate supervision requires the supervisor on the same project or jobsite, without continuous line of sight; residential supervision permits an off-site supervisor available for direction, oversight, inspection and evaluation. The ordinary ratio is two apprentices per supervisor on nonresidential projects and three on residential projects. Beginning in the fourth training year, the statute permits up to eight hours without supervision in a 24-hour period. This is not independent contracting authority.
Experience or qualification: Submit the employer-signed Verification of Supervision form identifying the contractor, licensed supervisor and type of work, together with the application and required disclosures.
Examination: No entrance examination is required for the Apprentice Electrician license.
Application fee: $116 nonrefundable application-processing fee.

Journeyman Electrician License License

Scope of work: Wire, install and repair electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power and other purposes within the general electrical scope. An individual license is distinct from the contractor business license and may supervise apprentices subject to the applicable limits.
Experience or qualification: Standard education route: at least 576 hours of approved electrical study completed over no less than 48 months plus 8,000 hours of full-time work as a licensed apprentice. Experience-only route: 16,000 hours as a licensed apprentice. Competency examinations may satisfy education or determine program placement under the separate expedited pathway; they do not establish a blanket waiver of work experience. Credit is limited to 3,000 work hours per 12-month period and lawful experience before application; provide employer verification and required transcripts. Out-of-state hours require official license verification.
Examination: Pass the Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam at 75 percent or higher and the Utah Electrician Practical Exam. The standard education route permits exam admission after completing the program and 6,000 apprentice work hours; license issuance still requires 8,000. Current scheduling instructions require first-time school approval for formally trained applicants and experience verification, despite the exam page’s blanket statement that preapproval is unnecessary. Confirm the appropriate pathway with DOPL and Prov before booking.
Application fee: $116 nonrefundable DOPL application-processing fee. Examination charges are separate; the linked Prov bulletin gives inconsistent practical-test fee wording, so confirm the amount for the selected examinations before paying.

Master Electrician License License

Issuing authority: Utah Department of Commerce — Division of Professional Licensing →
Scope of work: Plan, lay out and supervise wiring, installation and repair of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power and other purposes. The individual master license can supply the required qualification for an E200 business but does not itself grant a contractor business license.
Experience or qualification: Qualify through one of three routes: an EAC/ABET-accredited electrical-engineering bachelor’s or master’s degree plus 2,000 work hours as a licensed apprentice; an approved electrical-trade applied-science associate degree plus 4,000 work hours as a licensed journeyman; or 8,000 work hours as a licensed journeyman. Credit is limited to 3,000 work hours per 12-month period and lawful experience before application; provide employer verification and required transcripts. Out-of-state hours require official license verification. The current application, under its combined master-level heading, says 2,000 hours may be verified through associate-degree transcripts. The rule states the work-hour requirements separately and lists no associate-degree route for residential master. Confirm this ambiguous credit instruction with DOPL before subtracting work hours or assuming another qualifying route.
Examination: Pass the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Exam at 75 percent or higher. Current DOPL application and exam pages also require the general practical examination unless previously passed for journeyman licensure; R156-55b-302b lists only the master law-and-rule exam for this level. Confirm practical credit and the applicable testing requirement with DOPL.

E200 General Electrical Contractor License Classification Business license classification

Issuing authority: Utah Department of Commerce — Division of Professional Licensing →
Scope of work: Business classification for general electrical contracting, including the E201 residential and S202 solar-photovoltaic scopes. Hiring and subcontracting remain within the authorized scope.
Experience or qualification: The applicant or business qualifier must hold an active Utah Master Electrician license. The contractor application separately requires two years of paid construction-industry experience (4,000 hours), or a documented qualifying alternative such as a recognized Construction Management degree, Utah professional-engineer license, NASCLA commercial-building examination credit, prior qualifying service or approved endorsement. Supply the qualifier affidavit, financial-responsibility disclosures, business registration and required insurance evidence; the individual master license does not replace the business application.
Examination: Pass the Utah Contractor Business and Law examination unless a documented authorized alternative applies. The usual prelicensure education is the 25-hour course plus five hours of Business and Law. The statute exempts the extra five hours when the 25-hour course was completed before July 1, 2019, while the current agency page says before October 1, 2019; confirm eligibility before relying on that exemption. Separate exemptions exist for specified education, professional licensure, recent qualifying service or approved endorsement. The qualifier’s underlying electrician license has its own examination requirements.
Application fee: $175 per classification plus $50 per qualifier and a $1 electronic-reference-library surcharge: $226 for one classification and one qualifier. Additional ownership-registration charges may apply; examination and course charges are separate.
Renewal: Renew by November 30 of odd-numbered years; the current renewal fee is $128. Complete six approved CE hours per two-year term, including at least three core hours, three hours of live in-class attendance and one hour of energy conservation. The licensee may designate its qualifier, officer, director or supervising individual as permitted by the rule. Maintain required insurance and registrations, and submit the renewal online unless DOPL permits another method in writing. Inactive status does not authorize contracting.

Residential Journeyman Electrician License License

Scope of work: Wire, install and repair electrical apparatus and equipment on buildings using primarily nonmetallic sheath cable within the residential classification. An individual license is distinct from the contractor business license; apprentice supervision remains subject to applicable limits.
Experience or qualification: Standard education route: at least 288 hours of approved electrical study completed over no less than 24 months plus 4,000 hours of full-time work as a licensed apprentice. Experience-only route: the rule requires 8,000 apprentice hours and the statute describes four years; the current application instead says those 8,000 hours must span at least six years. Confirm this unresolved duration discrepancy with DOPL. Competency examinations may satisfy education or determine program placement under the separate expedited pathway. Credit is limited to 3,000 work hours per 12-month period and lawful experience before application; provide employer verification and required transcripts. Out-of-state hours require official license verification.

Examination eligibility and licensing requirements

Early examination admission and license issuance are different stages. On the standard education route, the rule allows journeyman testing after the approved program and 6,000 apprentice hours, but requires 8,000 hours for licensure. The corresponding residential thresholds are 3,000 hours for testing and 4,000 for licensure. The approved competency-exam sequence can satisfy education or determine placement; DOPL’s separate out-of-state competency assessment evaluates documented education and work, and submitting that assessment is not a license application.

DOPL’s exam page says preapproval is not required, but its linked 2026 Prov bulletin requires first-time approval from the training school for formally educated journeyman and residential-journeyman candidates. DOPL also directs candidates to attach experience verification to their Prov registration, and the bulletin requests transcripts for out-of-state training. Confirm the applicable scheduling process with DOPL and Prov. The bulletin gives conflicting practical-test fee wording; verify your test charges before paying.

Two other discrepancies remain explicit in the credential details: the residential experience-only application says eight thousand hours over at least six years, while the statute describes four years and the rule requires eight thousand hours; and the master-level agency pages require practical testing unless already credited, while the examination rule lists the master law-and-rule exam. Obtain DOPL’s determination for your circumstances before relying on either interpretation.

Contractor and business responsibilities

The contractor application is separate from the qualifying person’s electrician license. It requires the applicable prelicensure education or documented exemption, Business and Law examination or authorized alternative, construction experience or approved alternative, financial disclosures, and business and tax registrations. The statute’s five-hour-course grandfather date is July 1, 2019; the agency instructions instead say October 1, 2019. Confirm that discrepancy before claiming an exemption.

The current insurance rule and agency instructions specify liability coverage of at least $1 million per incident and $2 million total, with DOPL as certificate holder. The March 2026 contractor application instead requests $3 million total. Confirm the certificate requirements with DOPL before submission. Workers’ compensation coverage or a valid no-employee waiver is also required, with employment, unemployment and tax registrations as applicable. Financial-responsibility issues can trigger additional documentation or a required bond.

Local requirements and related work

State licensing does not replace job-site permits, inspections or applicable local ordinances. The statute recognizes the business license issued where the licensee has its principal place of business and restricts additional local licensing demands. Check the authority for the actual project; this page does not inventory every local office or declare that no local requirements apply.

Specialty scopes, including solar, signs, alarms, elevators and utility work, require their own classification and exemption analysis. E200 includes the S202 solar-photovoltaic scope, but that does not turn every specialty holder into a general electrician. Apprentices remain subject to supervision rules. Licensure by endorsement is a conditional application pathway. The current electrician form asks for official verification of an active, good-standing license held for at least one year in a DOPL-designated equivalent jurisdiction and preserves master law-and-rule testing. Other applicants may document prior experience toward initial licensure or request DOPL’s competency assessment. The residential-journeyman electrician page currently links to a plumber endorsement map; use DOPL confirmation rather than treating that map as electrical eligibility. No directed state-to-state route is established by this page.

Qualifying military service members and spouses may have fee waivers, license extensions or exemption pathways. Use DOPL’s military instructions and the applicable statutory conditions; an inactive license or a pending application alone does not grant permission to work.

Use the current DOPL electrical licensing pages or the contractor application for the appropriate credential. Submit the required qualification disclosures and supporting records. Use the official electrical renewal instructions or contractor renewal instructions and check your status through Utah License Lookup.
