Electrician Licensing in Wyoming

Wyoming licenses electricians statewide. The journeyman-level credential is the Journeyman electrician, issued by the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. Its standard route requires 8,000 hours of experience; other routes can differ.

How electrical licensing works in Wyoming

Wyoming licenses individual electricians and restricted technicians separately from contractor businesses. Apprentice registrations are supervised entry routes. Holding a journeyman, master or technician license does not by itself authorize an independent contracting business; choose the credential that matches the work and the role you will hold.

Apprentice electrician Individual apprentice registration

Scope of work: Assist a licensed journeyman or master while employed by an electrical contractor. A journeyman or master may supervise no more than two apprentice electricians at a time; the agency also specifies supervision levels by documented apprenticeship year.

Journeyman electrician Individual electrician license

Scope of work: Perform electrical work as a licensed journeyman while employed by a Wyoming-licensed electrical contractor. This individual license is not independent authority to operate a contracting business.
Experience or qualification: Four years and 8,000 hours of qualifying electrical wiring experience over at least four years, plus 576 hours of approved electrical classroom instruction. Board Chapter 5 permits an alternative when the classroom hours cannot be supplied: 10 years and 20,000 hours of on-the-job experience as a licensed journeyman or master, subject to Chief Electrical Inspector approval. A current license in good standing from a city, county or state with equal or higher requirements may document work hours for examination eligibility; it does not itself waive the examination. Experience must cover residential, commercial and industrial installation, ordinarily with no more than 75% in one category; the Board may waive that distribution in special circumstances. Up to 4,000 hours of accredited electrical study above the required classroom instruction may receive work-history credit. Military work evidence requires the agency’s documentation.
Examination: Obtain approval to take the Wyoming examination and pass with at least 70%; schedule with the testing agency after approval and submit the pass letter through the portal. Starting work and choosing a specialty

An apprentice electrician assists a licensed journeyman or master through a licensed electrical contractor and must enroll in approved or accepted equivalent training. Apprentice technicians train in their selected low-voltage or limited category. The statute limits a journeyman or master to two apprentice electricians at a time, and a technician to one apprentice technician. The agency also publishes supervision levels based on the electrician apprentice’s documented work and classroom progress.

The LV codes cover general low-voltage work or restricted alarm, communication, sound, television/satellite, control and lawn-sprinkler systems. The LM codes cover restricted elevator, sign, water-well/irrigation, lighting-maintenance and HVAC electrical work. An LM-E credential covers the specified elevator electrical work; it is not a general electrical or inspection credential. These specialties are work scopes, not compulsory steps toward a master license.

Contractor businesses and qualifying individuals

A contractor license belongs to the firm. Electrical contractors need a Wyoming master electrician of record. Low-voltage and limited contractors need an appropriate Wyoming qualifier for their category. The statute names the corresponding technician of record; current agency guidance also lists journeymen and masters. Confirm the accepted qualifier with the department before applying. The qualifier role requires full-time active employment and is limited to one contractor; it is not another independently issued license. A departing qualifier creates a tightly limited replacement period, with weekly reporting requirements described in the contractor panels.

Published contractor fees are annual and differ from the individual worker fees. The statute includes a narrow fee waiver for low-voltage and limited sole operators who employ no additional technicians or apprentice technicians. That is not a universal free-license rule. Card-processing charges are additional to the posted fees.

Reciprocity, temporary permits and source differences

Journeyman and master reciprocity have different participating-state lists and conditions. Reciprocity waives the examination only for eligible applicants; it does not waive all licensing requirements. Use the official guidance for the current agreement, examination history, experience, education and good-standing requirements. Technician applicants should not assume that the journeyman/master agreements cover their category.

Temporary work permits are narrow authorizations for eligible journeyman, low-voltage technician or limited technician applicants who provide qualifying examination experience evidence and pay the required fees. The statute sets a 150-day maximum and permits revocation at any time. Department Chapter 6 excludes examination-qualified apprentice electricians and allows no more than one temporary permit per individual. Its expired-Wyoming-journeyman provision allows one 30-day permit. Confirm current charges directly with the department; these are not ordinary renewal or entry-level licenses.

The agency’s technician category table differs materially from current Board Chapter 5. The rule groups communications, sound, television and control as LV-CATV, combines signs and lighting as LM-LS, and uses LV-L for lawn sprinklers. The agency uses separate codes and, for several categories, different experience hours. The alarm-duration rule also literally says “two (18) months.” Do not assume the codes are interchangeable or the lower webpage threshold establishes eligibility; confirm the category and requirement with the department. The panels preserve both sources.

Technician renewal guidance also combines an April 1 opening and a 90-day window with “year before” wording. The current department rule sets July 1 expiration and a term of no more than three years. Confirm the dates in your account before paying. Apprentice registration renewals have a September 1 deadline, distinct from the July–June experience-reporting year. Fees and continuing-education requirements depend on the credential.

Permits and coverage

Statewide licensing does not remove local enforcement and permitting requirements. Identify whether the state or a local authority handles the job site’s electrical permits and inspections. This is not an exhaustive inventory of municipal licenses or approvals.

Homeowner work, utility and other statutory exemptions, inspection appointments, and unrelated trade authorizations are outside this credential inventory. Reinstatement, late renewal, reciprocity and master/technician-of-record assignments are conditions or pathways attached to the applicable license, not additional career stages.
