West Virginia has a reviewed application route for some licenses from 3 states. A route can waive an exam or some experience; you still need the West Virginia credential before you work. Expand a state for the routes and their requirements.
North Carolina Reciprocity
- If you hold
- North Carolina Unlimited electrical contracting license (NCBEEC)
- You can apply for
- West Virginia Unlimited electrical contractor license (WV State Fire Marshal)
To apply:
- Hold a current NC Unlimited electrical contracting license in good standing in all jurisdictions of licensure.
- Apply through the WV State Fire Marshal Online License Portal with the required fee and proof of qualifications.
- Provide an SSN as required by statute.
- Obtain a WV Contractors Licensing Board license if contracting as a business.
Limits:
- WV Code 29-3B-4(d) grants the same or equivalent classification without written examination; WV publishes no per-state reciprocity list, so NC-specific itemization is null.
- NCBEEC's three-year holding rule applies to the WV-to-NC direction, not this route.
- Only the NC Unlimited to WV Unlimited mapping is stated (NCBEEC outbound table); NC Limited/Intermediate/SP/SP-SFD have no claimed route (null).
- The West Virginia license must issue before work; the examination waiver is not authority to work.

Ohio Reciprocity
- If you hold
- Ohio OCILB Electrical Contractor license (Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board; Ohio Rev. Code ch. 4740), exam-based (PSI)
- You can apply for
- West Virginia Contractor License with Electrical classification via the Ohio-West Virginia reciprocity agreement (West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board; W. Va. Code ch. 30 art. 42, sec. 30-42-18)
To apply:
- hold a current Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) Electrical Contractor license obtained by examination (PSI-administered; ORC ch. 4740; not grandfathered or waiver-issued)
- be in good standing with no disciplinary action or open complaints in Ohio
- name the person who 'Qualified For Ohio License By Passing The Required Examination Administered By The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board' and the examination date on the Reciprocity Application Ohio form
- confirm the Ohio license was NOT 'Issued Pursuant To An Agreement Between The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board And Another State' (agreement-issued Ohio licenses screened out)
- obtain OCILB's certification on the form ('Confirmation by the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board that the above information provided by the Applicant for a West Virginia Contractor License is accurate'); upon approval, apply for the WVCL Board license with the required fee (WV Code 30-42-18 certification per 30-42-15(c))
Limits:
- the agreement is 'including Business & Law Exam': the WV business & law requirement still applies
- 'Workers must be properly licensed by the WV Fire Marshal's Office' - the individual master/journeyman tier (103 CSR 5 sec. 9) publishes no Ohio-named agreement and Ohio has no statewide master/journeyman credential, so the pathway is incomplete for performing electrical work without a separately obtained WV Fire Marshal license (residual: unresolved)
- the WV license must be issued before work; the reciprocal agreement is not authority to work

Electrician licenses
The State Fire Marshal issues Master and Journeyman Electrician licenses, along with specialty licenses for plumbing, heating and air conditioning electrical work (SP-PH), electric signs (SP-ES), single-family residential dwellings (SP-SFD), and low-voltage work (SP-LV). Current rules also define a Specialty Elevator Electrician license (SP-EL), but current application and issuance availability could not be confirmed. Contact the State Fire Marshal before relying on that classification.
An electrician assistant or helper is a supervised, unlicensed role rather than a separate license. Registered-apprenticeship completion and approved vocational education may provide routes toward Journeyman eligibility, but West Virginia does not issue a State Fire Marshal apprentice-electrician credential.
Electrical inspector certifications
Electrical inspection is separately regulated through Class A, Class B, and Class C Electrical Inspector certifications. Each class has its own permitted inspection scope and qualification requirements. An inspector certification does not replace an electrician license for installation work.
Electrical contractor businesses
A business contracting for electrical work generally needs a Contractor License carrying the Electrical classification. The business must meet the Contractor Licensing Board’s requirements and have an eligible qualifier. Serving as the qualifier is a relationship to the licensed business, not a separate contractor credential.
Temporary and alternate routes
The State Fire Marshal provides one-time, 90-day Temporary Master and Temporary Journeyman licenses for qualifying applicants. Reciprocity, recognition of out-of-state experience, reinstatement, and other alternate pathways may affect how a person qualifies, but they do not create additional permanent license classes.
Before you apply
Confirm the correct authority, current application, examination, fee, and renewal requirements for the work you plan to perform. Businesses and individuals may need different credentials, and project permits or inspections may still be required. This page was re-verified against firemarshal.wv.gov on October 1, 2026.
