Electrician Licensing in Virginia
Virginia licenses electricians statewide. The journeyman-level credential is the Journeyman Electrical Tradesman License (ELE), issued by the Virginia Board for Contractors (DPOR).

How electrical licensing works in Virginia
Virginia separates individual tradesman licensing from contractor-business licensing. Individual electrical workers may qualify at the Journeyman or Master level. A business that contracts for electrical work must hold the appropriate Class A, B, or C contractor license with an electrical work-scope designation.
Credential-specific requirements
Requirements differ by credential. Expand any credential for the work or business activity you plan to perform. Issued by Virginia Board for Contractors (DPOR) unless noted.
Journeyman Electrical Tradesman License (ELE) Individual license
- Issuing authority

- May perform installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical materials and equipment using the working knowledge needed to comply with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and applicable plans and specifications.
- Experience or qualification
- Current routes include graduated practical-experience and formal-training combinations, qualifying education routes, approved apprenticeship completion, out-of-state review, and an experience-only route of eight years. The current application and regulation control; a separately posted booklet retains a stale ten-year instructions conflict. Virginia does not issue a DPOR apprentice license, and supervised unlicensed work is permitted by statute.
- Examination
- Virginia Journeyman tradesman examination; current PSI charge is $100. Approved apprenticeship completion can exempt the Journeyman examination. Reciprocity, examination-agreement, and Universal License Recognition routes are alternatives to the ordinary license, not separate credentials.
- Initial fee
- Current application total is $171.75: the $150 regulatory original-license fee plus the temporary $7.25-per-year technology fee for a three-year term.
- Renewal
- Expires three years from the last day of the issuance month. Renewal has a $160 regulatory base fee plus any applicable three-year technology fee and requires three hours of Board-approved electrical code-change continuing education.

Master Electrical Tradesman License (ELE) Individual license
- Issuing authority
- Virginia Board for Contractors (DPOR) →
- Scope of work
- May perform planning and layout of electrical work and supervise installation, repair, and maintenance in addition to the underlying electrical tradesman authority.
- Experience or qualification
- Qualify through at least one year of practical experience as a licensed Journeyman or through the current experience-only route of nine years. The current application and regulation control; a separately posted booklet retains a stale ten-year instructions conflict. Universal License Recognition and approved out-of-state routes produce the same Master license.
- Examination
- Virginia Master tradesman examination; current PSI charge is $125. Any accepted reciprocity, examination-agreement, or Universal License Recognition route is an alternate path to this ordinary license.
- Initial fee
- Current application total is $171.75: the $150 regulatory original-license fee plus the temporary $7.25-per-year technology fee for a three-year term.
- Renewal
- Expires three years from the last day of the issuance month. Renewal has a $160 regulatory base fee plus any applicable three-year technology fee and requires three hours of Board-approved electrical code-change continuing education.

Class A Contractor License — Electrical Scope Business license
- Issuing authority

- Scope of work
- Business contractor license with no monetary restrictions on contract or project size. Electrical scope may be carried as the broad Electrical (`ELE`) classification, which includes the narrower Electronic/Communication Service (`ESC`) and Fire Alarm Systems (`FAS`) work, or through those separately selected specialty designations. `ESC` and `FAS` are limited to systems operating at 50 volts or less. Alternative Energy Systems (`AES`) is excluded because its scope expressly does not provide electrical functions; Billboard/Sign (`BSC`) is also excluded from general electrical authority.
- Experience or qualification
- The business must provide a qualified individual for each designation. The qualified individual needs five years of applicable experience; the `ELE` qualified individual must hold a current Master Electrical Tradesman license. Class A also requires a designated employee, proof of at least $45,000 net worth/equity or an accepted $50,000 surety bond, and responsible-management and financial disclosures. Each qualified individual must be responsible management or a full-time employee working at least 30 hours per week. For Class A and B, the designated employee must likewise be full-time or responsible management. The current reciprocal-agreements PDF maps North Carolina Unlimited and Intermediate electrical contractor licenses to Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman and Class A or Class B electrical contractor business-license and examination reciprocity. - All classes require the Board-approved pre-license course. Class A and B require a designated employee to pass the applicable contractor class examination; Class C does not use that designated-employee examination. `ELE` uses the qualified individual's current Master Electrical Tradesman license instead of a separate ELE technical examination. `ESC` and `FAS` require their applicable specialty examinations.
- Initial fee
- Current ordinary application total is $439.50: $400 base initial fee, $25 Contractor Transaction Recovery Fund assessment, and $14.50 two-year technology fee. Vendor examination charges are separate.
- Renewal
- Expires two years from the last day of the issuance month. Base renewal is $270, plus the $30 renewal recovery-fund assessment and any applicable two-year technology fee. No contractor continuing-education total was established. For Class A and B designated-employee departures, the statutes require a new designated employee within 90 days while the current regulation says 120 days; this conflict is preserved and 90 days is the conservative compliance boundary. Qualified-individual changes must be reported within 60 days. A legal-entity change voids the nontransferable license and requires a new application within 30 days. Renewal applicants must continue to satisfy the applicable class qualifications.

Alabama Reciprocity

Journeyman and Master Electrical Tradesman
A Journeyman may install, repair, and maintain electrical systems within the license scope and applicable codes, plans, and specifications. A Master may also plan, lay out, and supervise electrical installation, repair, and maintenance. Virginia may place more than one trade designation on a single Tradesman License, so the electrical level is one part of the holder’s license.
Virginia does not issue a separate DPOR electrician-apprentice license. A beginner may perform electrical work under the supervision of a tradesman licensed for that specialty. Registered apprenticeship is one training route and may support a Journeyman examination exemption, but it is not the only route for every supervised beginner.
Contractor licenses and electrical designations
Class A, B, and C contractor licenses are issued to businesses and differ by contract-value limits and qualification requirements. Electrical (ELE), Electronic/Communication Service (ESC), and Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) identify the work a contractor may perform; they are not separate business-license classes. A business using the ELE designation must have a qualified individual who holds a Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman license. Alternative Energy Systems (AES) expressly excludes electrical functions, and Billboard/Sign (BSC) permits only its defined sign-related connections rather than general electrical work. Do not treat either designation as a substitute for ELE authority.
Alternate application routes
Examination, qualifying apprenticeship completion, reciprocity or examination agreements, Universal License Recognition, and certain military-spouse provisions may provide alternate ways to obtain or use an ordinary license. They do not create additional permanent license levels. Virginia's temporary contractor license requires a comparable current out-of-state contractor credential in good standing and a simultaneous ordinary Class A, B, or C application. It may be issued only once and for no more than 45 days. Temporary authority ends when the ordinary license is issued and is automatically suspended if the ordinary application is denied.
