How electrical licensing works in Montana

Montana licenses individual electricians and electrical contracting businesses at the state level. An individual license and a contractor license serve different purposes: the business must designate the appropriately qualified responsible electrician. This page covers the permanent worker and contractor licenses, with temporary and other pathways explained separately.

Journeyman Electrician License License

Issuing authority: Montana State Electrical Board →
Scope of work: Wiring, installing and repairing electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power and other purposes. A journeyman who is not a contractor’s responsible electrician works only as an employee of a licensed electrical contractor.
Experience or qualification: Provide written evidence of an approved electrical apprenticeship or substantially equivalent program; 8,000 hours of legally obtained practical experience; or 20,000 hours of electrical maintenance with employer certification, including at least 8,000 practical hours. Current ARM 24.141.502 calls temporary authority a provisional license: normally 90 days or until examination results, with possible case-by-case extension if it expires before the scheduled examination. Master Electrician License License

Workers and contracting businesses

A Limited Electrical Contractor uses a licensed journeyman as responsible electrician and is restricted to residential construction with fewer than five living units in one structure. An Unlimited Electrical Contractor uses a licensed master and has the broader scope shown in the credential disclosures. The Board’s contractor webpage describes only a master responsible party, but current ARM 24.141.505 retains both classes. A responsible-electrician designation is not a separate license.

Permits and local jurisdiction

State licensing does not replace electrical permits and inspections. The job-site jurisdiction determines whether the state or a certified local government handles the permit. Check the official permit guidance before starting work; this page does not inventory every local business-license or permit requirement.

Provisional licenses and other pathways

The current provisional-license rule, effective February 7, 2026, provides limited authority while an applicant completes licensing. Older applications still call it a Temporary Practice Permit. It is normally valid for 90 days or until examination results and cannot make its holder a contractor’s responsible electrician. The rule, forms and FAQ differ on some retry and timing details; the credential disclosures identify those differences. Confirm the authorization actually issued before working.

Out-of-state licensure may qualify for substantial-equivalency processing under the Board’s adopted list. It remains an application pathway, not a license or general permission to work in Montana. Directed reciprocity routes are reviewed separately. The Board also describes a distinct military-spouse provisional process while verification is pending; do not equate that process with the examination applicant’s provisional license.

Apprenticeship is a training and supervised-work pathway rather than another permanent license in this inventory. The statute excludes experience from an uncompleted apprenticeship from its definition of legally obtained practical experience, and apprenticeship hours do not count as journeyman-level experience. A Pioneer Electrician Certificate is honorary and does not authorize licensed work.

Two older-source conflicts are resolved by current rules: continuing education is 16 hours during the renewal cycle, including at least eight NEC-update hours, and Unlimited Electrical Contractors cover commercial, residential, industrial and institutional installations. Other discrepancies remain in the residential 4,000/8,000-hour checklist and the journeyman form’s residential-only wording. Use the current statute and rules while asking the Board to resolve application-processing questions.

The Board announced a 50% renewal-fee abatement for the May 15–July 15, 2026 renewal window. That window has closed; the standing fees in the credential disclosures are not a quote for a late renewal. Verify the amount due and any late charges through the current renewal process.
