Program Structure
Kansas City JATC’s Inside Wireman apprenticeship combines paid employment with a signatory electrical contractor and classroom/lab instruction. The sponsor describes a five-year program with 8,000 on-the-job hours. Its applicant packet specifies at least 900 hours of related study; the program webpage presents 900 classroom hours without that qualifier. Plan for the minimum and confirm the current schedule.
Training is based at 303 E. 103rd Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri. Work covers commercial and industrial electrical installation, maintenance and troubleshooting. The packet describes work as generally 40 hours weekly, not a guarantee of continuous employment. Confirm job-area boundaries and travel expectations. Classes use online homework; the packet requires internet access and a Windows-based computer.
Requirements
The linked applicant packet permits applying at 17; selection and indenture require age 18. The standard route requires high school completion, GED/HiSET or an associate degree or higher, transcripts, qualifying algebra, a valid driver’s license, aptitude testing and an interview. The current page also accepts approved online algebra or technical math.
A separate route exists for applicants documenting at least 4,000 electrical-construction work hours. Ask the JATC to evaluate eligibility rather than assuming experience guarantees direct entry. Submit a DD-214 when applicable. Drug screening and a physical precede work assignment.
Application Process
Applications are online only during the first seven days of each month. The current notice resumes Inside Wireman applications September 1, 2026, for the 2027 class; this year’s classes are full. Outside the seven-day window, the application does not work. Follow the official application instructions.
The packet allows 30 days to submit required documentation. The full testing and interview process may take six months. Selection is competitive, and completing an application does not guarantee admission or an immediate job.
What You Earn
Apprentices earn contractor wages and may qualify for benefits; request the current wage schedule and eligibility terms. No numeric wage is quoted here. Missouri’s official sponsor list and Apprenticeship.gov identify the electrician program separately from residential and telecommunications routes.
Classes have no tuition, but there is a $25 nonrefundable application fee, and apprentices buy books and tools. The linked 2024 packet gives dated book estimates; obtain current prices. Total participant cost remains unconfirmed. Completing training should not be treated as an automatic local electrician license.
