Missouri has no statewide journeyman electrician license. The state licenses electrical contractors through the Missouri Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors. Some local governments issue their own electrician licenses; check the rules where you will work.

How electrical licensing works in Missouri
Missouri offers an optional statewide electrical contractor license. Contractors already licensed where they work, or working in a locality that does not require a contractor license, are not required to obtain it merely to continue contracting there. Local governments must recognize the statewide license for contracting work and permits, while retaining the powers described in state law over business licensing, permits, inspections, and electrician licensing.
The statewide contractor license and local worker credentials serve different purposes. This page covers the statewide license and a curated selection of local credentials in the City of St. Louis and Springfield. The local list is not exhaustive; identify the authority governing your actual job site before choosing a license.
Credential-specific requirements
Requirements differ by credential. Expand any credential for the work or business activity you plan to perform. Issued by Missouri Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors unless noted.

- Issuing authority
- Missouri Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors →
- Scope of work
- Electrical contracting: the business of installing, erecting, or maintaining electrical wiring, fixtures, apparatus, equipment, devices, or components, regardless of voltage, used for generation, transmission, and utilization of electricity. Local governments must recognize the statewide license for contracting work and permits, subject to the local powers preserved by section 324.925. A supervisory license holder may represent only one firm at a time.
- Experience or qualification
- Ordinary routes: 12,000 verifiable practical installation hours; 10,000 such hours plus a journeyman certificate from a U.S. Department of Labor-approved electrical apprenticeship program; 8,000 such hours plus an associate's degree from a state-accredited program; or 4,000 verifiable hours supervising installation plus a four-year electrical engineering degree. Section 324.920.2 also provides a route for holders of qualifying Missouri local contractor/master licenses with the specified examination and either 12,000 practical hours or licensure for six of the preceding eight calendar years. Provide $500,000 liability insurance and post bonds required by each locality where work is performed.
- Examination
- Pass a standardized, nationally accredited third-party electrical assessment examination meeting division-determined current national industry standards and pay its cost. The qualifying Missouri local-license pathway instead requires a standardized written examination based on the National Electrical Code, administered by an independent competent professional testing agency unaffiliated with a political subdivision or the State of Missouri; submit supporting examination documentation for review.
- Initial fee
- $200 nonrefundable license application fee; examination costs are separate.
- Renewal
- Triennial renewal; licenses expire September 30 every third year following 2020. The fee page lists $100 for triennial renewal. The July 2019 FAQ projected $200; confirm the current amount with the office. Current continuing-education requirements were not established by the retained evidence.

- Geographic validity
- Applies only to work governed by the City of Springfield. This is part of a curated, non-exhaustive local cohort.
- Scope of work
- Local certification to work as a master electrician in Springfield. A master designated by a licensed contractor directly supervises and controls that firm’s electrical construction operations and code compliance. The individual trade certification and contractor business license are separate requirements.

Contractor and worker roles
A firm engaging in statewide-licensed electrical contracting must employ at least one statewide-licensed electrical contractor at a supervisory level. That contractor may represent only one firm at a time. The state application identifies the individual applicant and the employer naming that person as its qualifier; this page does not present a separate employer registration as another state license.
Springfield provides a local apprentice entry route: the apprentice works for a Springfield certified master in the same craft and must have a certified journeyman or master employed by that employer physically present at the job site. The application and ordinance differ on limited supervisor absences; see the apprentice card before relying on an exception. Its master and journeyman qualification routes differ; there is no single experience total that applies across this page.
Local coverage and fees
St. Louis City and St. Louis County are separate jurisdictions. The local records on this page cover the City, not the County. Kansas City and other Missouri localities are outside this reviewed local cohort.
The state office's fee page lists a $100 triennial renewal fee, while its July 2019 FAQ projected $200. Use the current fee page and confirm the amount when renewing. Springfield’s linked fee schedule is still dated January–June 2024. Its current certificate fee for a master or journeyman, and current renewal fees for all three local credentials, could not be verified. Ask Building Development Services for the current amounts before paying. The January 2026 apprentice application separately states a $10 registration fee. Annual renewal is established by ordinance, but the printed late-renewal dates differ; the credential cards explain this limitation.
Before you apply
Choose the credential for your role and job site. Use the state office's application forms and license lookup for the statewide license. For Springfield, use the master/journeyman or apprentice application linked in the corresponding credential. The apprentice form and ordinance describe registration and supervised work, but do not expressly settle examination applicability; confirm any examination requirement with Building Development Services at 417-864-1585. Use the same office to confirm current certificate fees, renewal fees and the conflicting late-renewal dates. For St. Louis City, contact the Building Division Electrical Section for current trade-license application instructions; an electrical permit portal is not a trade-license application. This page was re-verified against pr.mo.gov on October 1, 2026.
