Program Structure
The St. Louis Electrical JATC’s Commercial-Industrial (Inside) apprenticeship prepares electricians to install power, lighting, controls and equipment in commercial and industrial buildings. The five-year program is described as 9,000 hours including 960 classroom hours. The sponsor does not separately identify an on-the-job subtotal in that description; 9,000 is not presented here as workplace hours alone.
The JATC is a partnership of IBEW Local 1 and St. Louis NECA. It assigns apprentices to signatory contractors for supervised work while they attend classes. The training center is at 2300 Hampton Avenue in St. Louis. Applicants must reside within Local 1’s geographical jurisdiction; check the official requirements and jurisdiction listing before making travel plans. This entry excludes the distinct residential and telecommunications routes.
Requirements
Applicants must be 17 when applying and 18 when selected and initiated. A high-school diploma or GED is required, together with a full passing year of algebra and, for the inside program, geometry. The specified online Tech Math course can satisfy unmet math requirements.
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States, be able to speak, read and write English, and have sufficient physical fitness for the trade. Official transcripts and an original or certified birth certificate or unexpired passport must be supplied at application or within the stated 15-day period. Qualified applicants take an aptitude test before an individual committee interview.
Application Process
The sponsor’s site advertised accepting applications when checked September 8, 2026. Read the requirements, then follow the inside/telecommunications appointment link to complete the application at the training center. Do not use the residential contractor-sponsorship route for this program.
Selection depends on qualifications and expected work levels. Applications remain active for two years. Before employment referral, selected applicants attend orientation, pass a committee-paid substance-abuse test, and complete a physical examination at their own expense. What You Earn
This is an earn-while-you-learn program, but a dated cash-wage schedule and complete participant cost total were not established. Selected applicants must sign an Apprenticeship Scholarship Loan Agreement and Promissory Note. Obtain and understand those terms before signing; the program is not described here as cost-free.
Missouri’s January 2026 list identifies the JATC’s electrician occupation among U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeships. Registration does not guarantee a job opening or automatically issue an individual electrician license.
