Program Structure
Austin Electrical Training Alliance, also called Austin Electrical JATC, offers a four-year Inside Wireman apprenticeship. Apprentices work for participating electrical contractors while completing classroom and hands-on training at the Austin center, 4000 Caven Road. IBEW Local 520 and Central Texas NECA support the program.
The program requires 8,000 work hours. Its posted standards specify at least 720 hours of related instruction and the Inside Wireman course sequence. Subjects include electrical theory, drawings, conduit, controls, code, safety and photovoltaic systems. This listing covers the traditional apprenticeship, separate from summer student work and the Construction Electrician route.
Local 520's jurisdiction covers Central Texas. Ask about your assigned job area, travel expectations and the current classroom schedule. Placement with a participating contractor provides paid work; applying alone does not establish an employment offer.
Requirements
The posted standards require apprentices to be at least 18, have a diploma, GED or qualifying higher degree, meet the algebra requirement, and hold a valid driver's license. Accepted mathematics includes a passing full year of high school algebra, a semester of post-high-school algebra, or Electrical Training Alliance Tech Math. Review documented alternate-entry exceptions with the JATC.
Coursework requires a laptop and stable internet access. Applicants who need testing accommodations should notify the JATC before their test appointment and provide the requested documentation. Confirm the current document checklist when the next application period opens.
Application Process
The sponsor says the September 2026 class application deadline has passed and the next opening will be announced. Although the posted standards describe year-round online applications, the current website notice indicates a pause; follow that notice and check with the office before paying a fee.
The normal process is an online application, a $35 fee, algebra and reading-comprehension aptitude testing, an oral interview for qualifying applicants, and placement on a ranked list. What You Earn
Selected apprentices earn contractor wages with advancement based on performance. Tuition is announced before classes start; the application fee is not the total training cost. Confirm tuition, books, tools and technology expenses before accepting.
The sponsor's adopted standards identify the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship as registering agency. This is sponsor-hosted evidence, not an independent current registry lookup. Apprenticeship completion and Texas electrician licensing are separate requirements.
