Program Structure
Austin Electrical Training Alliance (Austin Electrical JATC) runs a four-year Inside Wireman apprenticeship that combines classroom, hands-on and on-the-job training. Apprentices work for participating electrical contractors, earning a percentage of the negotiated journeyman wage. IBEW Local 520 and the Central Texas Chapter of NECA fund the training center at 4000 Caven Road, Austin, TX 78744.
The program covers 8,000 training hours, and the sponsor's posted standards list 720 hours of related instruction for the Electrician (Interior Electrician) / Inside Wireman occupation. This listing is the traditional apprenticeship, not the Summer Student-Worker or Construction Electrician programs. Local 520's jurisdiction covers central Texas, including Travis, Hays, Williamson, Bastrop and other listed counties; ask about your job area, travel and the class schedule.
Requirements
The JATC's posted apprenticeship standards set the minimum qualifications. Apprentices must be at least 18. They need a high school diploma, a high school equivalency certificate or GED, or a two-year associate degree or higher. For math, they need one full year of high school algebra with a passing grade, one semester of post-high-school algebra with a passing grade, or the electrical training ALLIANCE online Tech Math course. Applicants must be able to work legally in the United States, provide a valid Social Security number and hold a valid driver's license. Courseware needs a laptop and stable internet. Applicants who need testing accommodations must arrange them with the JATC before the test, with documentation of the disability and the accommodation needed.
Application Process
The website says the application portal is now open. The deadline for the next class has not been posted; the deadline for September 2026 classes was June 21, 2026. The process is entirely online. Apply and pay the $35 fee, then take the aptitude test battery: algebra and functions plus reading comprehension, about two and a half hours. If you do not reach the qualifying score you must wait 90 days to retest. Qualifying applicants have an oral interview with a labor-management panel. The interview score sets your rank, and applicants are assigned to classes in rank order until they are full; rankings change with each application round. Call (512) 389-3024 with questions.
What You Earn
The JATC's wage table, based on the 2025–2028 inside agreement from January 5, 2026, starts apprentices at $21.07 an hour (55%) and rises by period to $28.73 (75%), with journeymen at $38.30, assuming 40-hour weeks. Raises depend on performance. Tuition is announced before classes start. The last posted figure, $825 for the September 2025 to August 2026 term, has expired, so ask for the current amount and for book, tool and laptop costs. The sponsor says graduates receive a Department of Labor certificate; its posted standards are a template with blank registration fields, so registration was not independently confirmed. Texas licensing is separate.
