Program Structure
The Wichita Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee offers a four-year inside-wireman apprenticeship combining 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training with 900 hours of related study. Apprentices learn electrical installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting on commercial and industrial jobs. Training covers power distribution, lighting, motor controls, building automation, and the National Electrical Code.
The training center is at 810 W 13th St N, Wichita, KS 67203. Local 271 describes one ten-hour daytime class every two weeks; classroom time is unpaid. KANSASWORKS describes two school days per month with contractor work during the rest of the month. Confirm the assigned class calendar and job travel requirements before arranging other commitments. Kansas’s apprenticeship office lists the program in its South-Central region; confirm applicant residency rules with the JATC.
Requirements
Apply at 17 or older; selection and indenture require age 18. Ordinarily, applicants need a high school diploma, GED, or associate degree or higher, plus a passing year of high school Algebra I or a post-high-school algebra course. Provide official transcripts, a valid driver's license, and birth certificate. Veterans seeking credit must provide a DD-214.
The aptitude-test qualifying score is 4. Applicants must be able to perform the trade's essential functions; selected applicants must supply negative drug/alcohol test results. Documented experience can waive the education and algebra requirements: 4,000 hours in electrical construction; 4,500 hours as a residential wireman under an IBEW/NECA agreement; or three years of related instruction and 4,500 OJT hours in a registered non-IBEW/NECA electrical-construction apprenticeship.
Application Process
The JATC accepts applications online and through its listed application locations on weekdays excluding holidays. Start with the official requirements page. Pay the $25 nonrefundable application fee online and submit required information within 45 days. Qualified applicants interview and are selected by ranking; applying does not guarantee employment or a start date. Work hours earn wages and benefits; classroom attendance does not. No dated cash wage schedule is supplied here. Local 271 estimates approximately $4,500 over four years for tools, books, licensing exam and instruction, while KANSASWORKS lists a different total alongside annual book costs. The program total remains unresolved: ask for current itemized charges, including any union dues. The $25 application fee is not total tuition. The sponsor identifies its 900-hour classroom and 8,000-hour work program as a Kansas Registered Apprentice Program. Apprenticeship completion and electrician licensing are separate steps.
