Program Structure
Montana Electrical JATC's Inside Wireman apprenticeship combines paid work with electrical contractors throughout Montana and five years of classroom training. The sponsor specifies at least 8,000 on-the-job hours and 900 classroom hours, with work supervised by a licensed electrician. Residential and low-voltage apprenticeships are separate programs; their shorter schedules do not describe this inside-wireman route.
The Montana Electrical Training Center currently lists 303 Irene Street, Helena. Older state-hosted application material and the federal sponsor directory show 2616 Bozeman Avenue. Confirm the meeting location before traveling. The exact weekly class timetable and travel arrangements for your work area are unconfirmed.
Requirements
The current application instructions require applicants to be 18 at interview, have a high school diploma or GED, and hold a valid driver's license with an insurable driving record. Math preparation must include a passing algebra credit or one of the sponsor's listed math-course alternatives.
Prepare your birth certificate, Social Security card, driver's license, official high school transcripts, and work history. Supply college transcripts, GED records, DD-214, and verifiable previous electrical experience when applicable. An older state-hosted packet also requires Montana residency; the current sponsor instructions do not repeat that condition, so ask whether it still applies.
Application Process
Start with the sponsor's application instructions. They link to the secure TradeSchool application and a paper-application request. Online applicants have 30 days to finish the requirements after beginning. Paper requests are mailed weekly.
Complete applicants who qualify take an aptitude test covering algebra and reading, followed by an in-person interview if they earn a qualifying score. The current instructions keep ranked applicants on a list for up to one year; placement follows ranking as positions become available. Applying does not guarantee employment. Current intake dates are unconfirmed: the state-hosted 2023–2024 schedule is historical, not a 2026 application calendar.
What You Earn
Apprentices earn wages through employment; the sponsor describes pension and family medical benefits. Current wage amounts and detailed benefit eligibility are unconfirmed. The nonrefundable application fee is $55; paper applicants pay when returning their completed packet. Tuition, books, tools, and total participant costs are unconfirmed.
Apprenticeship.gov lists Montana Electrical JATC under Electricians, separately from its telecommunications occupation. Program completion is not itself an electrical license; confirm current licensing steps with the state board.
