Program Overview

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC), one of nine public community colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District, offers Electrical Construction and Maintenance training for people who want to become electricians. This listing covers the Electrical Construction & Maintenance: Electrician pathway, which LATTC offers as an Associate of Science degree and as a certificate. The college says the AS degree is designed for people seeking entry-level positions, and students should be able to commit to full-time study of about 24 hours a week in classrooms and laboratories, plus at least 12 hours of homework a week. A separate Construction Technician Associate of Arts degree is an evenings-only option for people already working in the electrical field. The college is at 400 West Washington Blvd, just south of downtown Los Angeles, and the department office is E2-122.

Curriculum Highlights

LATTC lists electrical theory, electrical controls, conduit installation, blueprints, low voltage systems, maintenance practices and equipment installation among the skills taught. Graduates should be able to use hand and power tools to industry and safety standards, solve electrical-trade math problems, and interpret technical information in the National Electrical Code. The program details table gives both the AS and the certificate 42 required course units and 48 total major units, and lists 21 general education units for the AS. The page does not state a completion time for either award. LATTC's Program Mapper lists the classes each award requires.

Admission Requirements

Start with LATTC's College Credit Application. New and some returning students must then verify their identity before enrolling, either through ID.me during the application or in a brief in-person or virtual meeting with a college employee, using a government-issued photo ID. Missing identification limits registration and may affect aid. Processing takes 2-3 business days, after which the college sends an electronic welcome letter with a student ID number and enrollment instructions. The program page lists no separate program admission requirements.

Cost & Financial Aid

LATTC's tuition page lists an enrollment fee of $46 per unit for California residents. In the regular semesters it adds a $19 health services fee, a $2 student representative fee and a $7 associated student fee. Out-of-state students pay $377 per unit plus the $46 enrollment fee; the newest out-of-state rate on the page is labeled 2025-2026. Books and supplies are extra. The financial aid office offers federal, state and campus-based aid, including fee waivers, grants, scholarships, work-study and loans, and LATTC's federal school code is 001227. These pages do not publish a total program price or address aid for this program specifically.

Career Outcomes

LATTC says completing the program gives students the knowledge and skills for a career in residential, commercial and industrial construction and maintenance of electrical systems. California's Labor Commissioner lists LATTC as approved school 106 at 400 Washington Blvd., open to the public and approved to offer the whole General Electrician, Residential Electrician, and Fire/Life Safety curricula. The degree and certificate are college awards, not electrician certification; check the Labor Commissioner's requirements before relying on school hours toward a certification exam.
