Program Overview

Long Beach City College's Electrical Technology program prepares students for entry-level work in electrical and electrically related trades. This listing covers the General Industrial Electrician pathway, which the 2026-2027 catalog offers as an Associate in Science and as a Certificate of Achievement. Both awards prepare students for entry-level work in electrical maintenance and troubleshooting, and graduates should be able to install, maintain and repair electrical systems safely. The program page says all ELECT and CISCO classes are held at the Pacific Coast Campus, now called the Trades, Technology, and Community Learning Campus, 1305 E. Pacific Coast Highway.

Curriculum Highlights

Required courses for both awards are four semesters of DC and AC fundamentals and motors and generators, algebra and trigonometry for technicians, an introduction to the National Electrical Code, code grounding, OSHA construction safety standards, and motor control wiring and troubleshooting. Students also complete commercial and industrial code courses, electrical cost estimating, pipe bending and blueprint reading for electricians. The certificate totals 41.5 units. The degree adds general education and electives to reach at least 60 units.

Admission Requirements

LBCC lists five steps for new electrical students: apply to the college, complete the online orientation in the Viking portal, attend ELECT 600, register for classes and pay fees. ELECT 600 introduces the program and its safety protocols, and the catalog requires new students to attend an electrical orientation before enrolling. Students with college math may bring transcripts to ask about substitutions for ELECT 202 and possibly ELECT 225.

Cost & Financial Aid

LBCC's fee page lists a $46 per unit enrollment fee for California residents in every term, plus a college services card fee, student health fee and course material fees that vary. Nonresident students pay $356 per unit in tuition plus the enrollment fee and a $30 per unit capital outlay fee. This listing does not state a total program price or aid eligibility for these awards; ask the financial aid office.

Career Outcomes

California's Labor Commissioner lists Long Beach City College as approved school 101 at the 1305 East Pacific Coast Highway campus, open to the public and approved to offer the whole General Electrician curriculum. The degree and certificate are college awards; they are not themselves electrician certification, so check the Labor Commissioner's requirements before relying on school hours toward a certification exam.
