Program Structure
The Electrical Training Institute's Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (Los Angeles Electrical JATC) offers a five-year Inside Wireman program that combines full-time paid work under a union contract with classroom instruction. Inside wiremen install conduit, wiring, fixtures and equipment in commercial, industrial and residential buildings. You must attend a combination of day and night classes for at least 240 hours a year; class weeks are unpaid, although you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Testing and classes take place at the institute, 6023 S. Garfield Avenue in Commerce. California's apprenticeship directory lists the program as Electrician (Inside Wireman), 60 months.
Requirements
You must be at least 18 when you apply and upload a valid government photo ID, a high school diploma, GED or college degree, and proof of algebra: two semesters of high school algebra or one semester of college algebra with a C or better, or the Electrical Training Alliance Tech Math course. Some veterans and reservists qualify for an algebra waiver. Foreign documents must be translated and notarized by a California notary. A valid Social Security number is required at indenture. Original documents and sealed transcripts are checked at boot camp. The work is physical, and pre-employment and continued drug testing, including for marijuana, is required.
Application Process
Applications are accepted online only, through TradeSchool, during designated application days. In 2026 the windows opened January 5, April 6, July 6 and October 5; the October window has closed and no next date was posted when checked on October 6, 2026. Windows close early once 2,000 applications are received. After applying you get access to the Personal Experience Form, which must be completed with supporting documents within 14 days and counts for up to 40% of your score; then you take an aptitude test at the institute. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee selection.
What You Earn
Under the wage schedule effective January 26, 2026, apprentices start at 40% of the journeyman rate, $26.00 an hour, and step up with work hours to $55.25 at 85%; the journey-level rate at 8,000 hours is $65.00. Employer contributions fund medical, hospital, prescription, dental and vision coverage and two pension plans. The sponsor does not publish a tuition or fee schedule for this program, so ask about books and tools. California's Division of Apprenticeship Standards lists the program. Completing the apprenticeship is separate from California electrician certification.
