Program Structure
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry of Nassau & Suffolk Counties, the Long Island JATC, is a labor-management committee whose members represent IBEW Local Union #25 and the National Electrical Contractors Association's Long Island Chapter. Its Construction Inside Wireman Electrician apprenticeship combines paid daytime work on construction projects with classes at night. To finish, you need at least 8,200 hours of on-the-job training and at least 900 hours of classroom instruction. The JATC is at 370 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge. It does not state the program's length in years.
Requirements
You must be a graduate of an approved high school or hold a New York State-approved high school equivalency diploma; have passed Elementary Algebra, Seq. Math 1, Math 1 or Freshman High School Regents Math; have lived in Nassau or Suffolk County for at least 12 months before the date you apply; and be at least 17 when you apply and 18 to be accepted. You must pass the NJATC/AIR aptitude test, given by the JATC, and a personal interview. Before final acceptance you must pass a substance abuse test and may need to pass a physical exam, which the JATC pays for.
Application Process
The JATC accepts applications only during an active New York State Department of Labor recruitment period, and its site does not post the next one. During a recruitment, applications are available on designated days between 10:00 a.m. and noon. You must apply in person, bringing your high school diploma or GED, your high school transcript to prove the algebra requirement, proof of residency, and any later transcripts or certificates of completion. Call 631-434-3939, ext. 2, for recorded information about future recruitments.
What You Earn
The JATC says apprentices earn a good wage and benefits such as health insurance, pensions, 401(k) plans and college credits, but it does not publish wage rates, tuition, fees or book costs. The JATC says the inside wireman program is registered with New York State, and New York's list of active apprenticeship sponsors includes Jatc Elec Ind Nassau/Suffolk #25 for the Electrician trade.
