Program Structure
Hawaii Electricians Training Fund offers the Inside Wireperson Apprenticeship through the Hawaii Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee. The program combines approximately five years and 10,000 hours of on-the-job training with 800 hours of classroom instruction. Apprentices learn to install conduit, wiring, fixtures, devices, and electrical equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.
The program covers Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island. Your apprenticeship term is on the island selected in your application. The sponsor lists training locations in Honolulu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Hilo, and Lihue; confirm your assigned location and class schedule. The Honolulu location is 1935 Hau Street, Suite 400. Hawaii DLIR's June 2026 register identifies the committee's Wireperson program separately from other electrical tracks.
Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 and provide a high school diploma or GED, transcripts, and evidence of the required algebra or an accepted mathematics alternative. The ordinary selection route requires the electrical-industry aptitude test and an oral interview. Applicants must be able to travel to job sites and safely perform or learn the essential work, with or without reasonable accommodation.
A substance-abuse test is required before indenture, and indentured apprentices must join IBEW Local 1186. U.S. citizenship is required for work on military bases where applicable. A preparatory boot camp of up to 80 hours normally applies before registration, with Direct Interview/Direct Entry exceptions; the recruitment notice postpones boot camp on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island until further notice.

Oahu applications are limited to qualifying Direct Interview applicants with required documentation, including the stated electrical-construction experience route; ineligible applications are closed without processing or a refund.
The notice advertises applications for the eligible pool on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island. Qualified candidates are ranked after interview and may receive opportunities when employers need apprentices. The pool lasts two years from interview; admission, employment, and a start date are not guaranteed. Overall availability varies by island, so confirm the current route at 808-847-0629.
What You Earn
Apprentices earn wages during on-the-job training, with progression tied to the program's steps. No current dollar wage is supplied here. The Inside Wireperson application fee is $33 and nonrefundable; it is not total program cost. Fund beneficiaries whose signatory employers contribute receive classes at no charge. Confirm that eligibility and obtain current book, tool, and union charges; the full participant cost is unknown. The sponsor describes taking the Hawaii electrician examination after completion; completing training does not itself award that license.
