Program Structure
IBEW Local 130 and the National Electrical Contractors Association sponsor electrical apprentice training for southeast Louisiana through the New Orleans Electrical JATC, with its apprenticeship office in Metairie. Apprentices are paid while they learn and train toward journeyman status. Local 130's page lists the apprenticeship duration as four years but adds that it varies by trade, so confirm the length of the electrical program with the office. The sponsor does not publish classroom-hour or on-the-job-hour totals, a weekly class schedule, or how job assignments work; ask the apprenticeship office before making travel or employment plans. The page does not name separate residential, lineworker or communications tracks.
Requirements
The application packet must include a valid driver's license (a state ID or other identification is not accepted), a Social Security card, a birth certificate in English or with a certified English translation, and a high school diploma, GED or higher, with an associate degree accepted, in English or certified translation. Military veterans add a DD-214. The application fee is a $25 money order; cash is not accepted. Minimum age, algebra, drug-screening and physical requirements are not published on the sponsor's pages, so confirm any other conditions with the office.
Application Process
Applications for the 2026-2027 school year are closed. Local 130 asks interested applicants to contact the office in January 2027 for information about the 2027-2028 school year. The apprenticeship line is 504-835-9899; the office at 3200 Ridgelake Drive, Suite 300, Metairie, is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. When applications are open, submit a complete packet and wait for a letter with an aptitude-test date. The test is offered every five to six weeks, and a score of 3 or higher moves you a step closer to the program. If no letter arrives within three to four weeks, call the office. Paid prep courses advertised on the page are optional and are not the application.
What You Earn
The page advertises excellent wages while you learn, paid health insurance, and pension and retirement benefits. It shows an apprenticeship pay range of $18 to $28.80 an hour plus benefits and a journeyman range of $36 to $43.20, but labels the duration as varying by trade and gives no effective date, so confirm the electrical rates. The $25 money order is the only numbered participant cost; tuition, books and tools are not published. An undated Louisiana Department of Education list of registered apprenticeships includes New Orleans Electrical JATC in Metairie for electrician. Completing the program is separate from Louisiana electrician licensing.
