Program Structure
Louisville Electrical JATC offers a four-year Inside Wireman apprenticeship combining full-time work for participating electrical contractors with classroom and hands-on lab education. Its curriculum covers electrical theory, print reading, grounding, controls, pipe bending, structured cabling, communication equipment and the National Electrical Code. This listing covers the inside electrical route; the outside lineman program has a separate application contact.
The Louisville campus is at 4315 Preston Highway, Suite 100. The JATC also names Lexington and Bowling Green facilities. Apprentices work a full-time week and attend class one day every other week, 8 hours during the day, from August to June. Its jurisdiction covers 68 Kentucky counties and 7 Indiana counties, and apprentices may be assigned anywhere within it.
Requirements
You may open an application at 17, but must be at least 18 before acceptance. Applicants need a high school diploma or GED, a full credit of high school algebra or higher math with C or better, and a valid driver's license. Previous electrical experience is not required; submit documentation if you want prior training or experience considered. A felony conviction does not by itself exclude an applicant.
Participating employers require scheduled and random substance-abuse testing. Apprentices must maintain a 75% grade average in classes.
Application Process
Applications open periodically and are posted on the JATC website. The September 1–14, 2026 window has closed, and no later window is posted. When open, apply online and pay the $55 processing/testing fee; required documents are due within 21 days of starting. Qualified applicants complete a Personal Experience Form and take the GAN aptitude exam, about 2.5 hours; its study guide lists math, reading comprehension and problem-solving among the topics. Those with qualifying scores have a ten- to fifteen-minute interview before a panel from IBEW Local 369, the NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center and NECA before ranking.
The application page says applicants who meet the basic requirements are interviewed, while the FAQ says not all applicants are offered an interview. Ranked applicants stay eligible for one year, and placements follow the list as jobs open, so completing the process does not guarantee immediate employment.
What You Earn
Apprentices are paid a percentage of the journeyman wireman rate, starting at 50% and rising through six periods to 70%, with benefits paid in addition. Under the Local 369 inside agreement's rates effective May 27, 2026, 1st-period apprentices earn $22.13 an hour; the journeyman wireman rate is $44.27, or $46.04 where the 20% retirement column applies. The JATC's pages list $22.13 and $44.26 without a date. Health insurance currently begins after about 211 working hours.
The sponsor currently charges no tuition, and books are covered when requirements are met. Apprentices pay for a computer, tools, school supplies, work attire and boots. The JATC describes its apprenticeship as registered through the Kentucky Department of Labor; this is the sponsor's statement, and we have not checked a government registry. Completion plus extra general education classes earns an Ivy Tech A.A.S. Completion and electrician licensing are separate matters.
