How electrical licensing works in Mississippi
The Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) licenses contracting businesses through commercial and residential classifications. An electrical classification identifies the work the license holder may undertake; the qualifying party is the person whose experience and examination support that business license.
This page covers the commercial Electrical major classification, its nine selectable specialties, Residential Electrical, and a curated, non-exhaustive set of local authorities. Jackson's individual journeyman and master licenses are shown separately. Choose the contractor scope and check the requirements of the locality where the work will take place.

To apply:
- hold a current North Carolina electrical contractor license issued by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCEEB), obtained by examination ('MUST HAVE TAKEN THE EXAM')
- have held the current license for one year ('MUST HOLD CURRENT LICENSE FOR ONE YEAR')
- be in good standing with no disciplinary action or open complaints in North Carolina
- complete the MSBOC license-verification form (Part 1 mailed to the NC board for completion of Part 2) and submit it with the application
- pass the Mississippi Business and Law exam ('All applicants are required to take the Mississippi Business and Law exam.')
- pay the $50.00 fee 'for each exam waived' and meet the standard MSBOC application requirements and Board review
Limits:
- the waiver covers the Electrical & Alarm Systems trade exams only ('Reciprocity applies to waiver of a trade exam requirement only. Each reciprocity agreement varies and may not cover all classifications of licensure.')
- reciprocity is a closed list: 'Reciprocity does not apply to any states or agencies not listed above.' - North Carolina IS listed
- the instructions PDF (rev. 5-2015) states a 3-consecutive-year holding condition; the live page's NC entry states ONE year - the live page governs
- the live NC entry does not differentiate NC's contractor classifications, so coverage of the NC Intermediate/Restricted tiers is not explicitly named and is subject to Board review
- Mississippi has no statewide individual journeyman/master electrician tier (municipal only); NC has no state journeyman license - nothing to map

Taking your Mississippi license elsewhere
Reviewed routes for Mississippi licensees, with requirements on each receiving state's page:
- Alabama: Mississippi Master Electrician license obtained by examination (Mississippi State Board of Contractors; Miss. Code Ann. § 73-21-101 et seq.) → Alabama Electrical Contractor (EC) license by reciprocity (Alabama Board of Electrical Contractors; Code of Alabama 1975 §§ 34-36-1 to 34-36-18, reciprocity at § 34-36-7(b)) (reciprocity)
State contractor and qualifying-party roles
A commercial applicant may select the Electrical major classification, which includes its listed electrical specialties, or select narrower specialties. The disclosures show these licensing choices; they are not a requirement to obtain every listed classification. A certificate can carry multiple classifications, with additional-selection fees. Qualifying-party additions or replacements are changes to the business license rather than another electrician credential.
MSBOC's FAQ describes the commercial licensing threshold as jobs over $50,000, while its linked statute excludes work costing less than $50,000 and the rules use equal-to-or-exceeding wording. Confirm coverage with MSBOC for a job at exactly $50,000. Residential electrical subcontractors are separately covered without a dollar minimum stated in the board's guidance; do not substitute the general residential-builder or remodeler thresholds. Statutory exemptions, including provisions for certain general-construction license holders, need their own evaluation.
Local licenses and permits
Jackson requires the appropriate individual license for work requiring a permit; only a master may obtain the trade permit and must supervise personnel. The city also requires electrical-contractor registration and specifies contractor insurance. A state certificate in an equivalent trade or a qualifying license from another Mississippi municipality or county may support a city equivalent-license route, subject to verification and fees. It is not automatic permission to begin work.
Gulfport and Biloxi are included as permit and contractor-application contacts. Their inclusion does not establish a complete inventory of individual licenses in either city, and this cohort does not cover every Mississippi locality. Jackson's homeowner exception is limited and retains permit, inspection and fee requirements; it is not a general contractor exemption.
Specialties, exam pathways and source differences
MSBOC's low-voltage communication classification is limited to energy-limited systems not exceeding 91 volts and excludes low-voltage alarms. Its alarm classification points to possible additional Department of Insurance requirements. Solar and Wind Construction is a separate classification; electrical connections still require the appropriate electrical classification. Solar construction and separate insurance-department credentials are outside this page's accepted inventory.
The current commercial renewal form and fee schedule list $400, while the older linked rule table lists $200. Confirm the payable amount with MSBOC. Fees and renewal requirements belong to the specific credential disclosures, rather than a single statewide worker requirement.
Trade-exam waiver routes do not waive the MSBOC application, business/law examination or other requirements. The current reciprocity webpage says the Louisiana agreement has ended but qualifying Louisiana passing scores remain recognized; an older linked PDF still describes an agreement. Use the current board instructions for the particular classification. Military-family and universal-recognition provisions are application pathways, not separate electrical credentials on this page.
Before you apply
Start with MSBOC's application instructions and current forms. Submit the application and wait for testing eligibility confirmation before scheduling. Use the board's renewal instructions, online renewal service, and contractor lookup.
For local work, contact Jackson's Building Permits Division, Gulfport Building Code Services, or Biloxi Planning and Development. Jackson's current fee amounts and application form were not established in this review; obtain them from the city before applying. This page was re-verified against msboc.us on October 1, 2026.
