Program Overview

FCPS Adult and Community Education (ACE) teaches the classroom side of an electrical apprenticeship. It isn't the employer: ACE says registered apprentices are full-time employees of the sponsoring employer, and it doesn't issue the Apprentice Action Form that shows state registration.

You can enroll without being a registered apprentice, but you won't receive a state certificate. ACE says classes taken within five years can count if you register later.

U.S. Department of Labor data lists ACE as an educator, and a Virginia Department of Labor and Industry sheet names it as a related-instruction partner. ACE says NCCER accredits its programs; this listing did not confirm that.

Curriculum Highlights

There are four Electrical levels. ACE offers levels 1 and 3 September through February and levels 2 and 4 February through June, for two-year completion. Apprenticeship 101 is listed for winter and June. Registered apprentices need at least 2,000 on-the-job hours and 144 classroom hours each year.

Unless otherwise noted, classes meet once in person and once online each week, and locations vary. The classes that began September 8, 2026 put Electrical 1 at the Plum Center in Springfield and Electrical 3 at Chantilly High School, Tuesdays from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., ending in January 2027.

Admission Requirements

Any adult over 18 may attend most ACE classes, and you don't need to live in Fairfax County. The class pages add a laptop or tablet but don't say whether levels must be taken in order. Registration closes at noon on the Friday before class begins.

On November 6, 2026, Electrical 1 and 3 showed as closed, and no Apprenticeship 101 class was listed. ACE says to check back six weeks before the next term.

Virginia Works says to email [email protected] to get started. ACE's FAQ sends registered-apprenticeship and licensing questions to the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).

Cost & Financial Aid

Tuition was $1,605 for Electrical 1 and $1,915 for Electrical 3 in the classes that began September 8, 2026. Levels 2 and 4 and Apprenticeship 101 weren't priced. Students also need an NCCER textbook and the 2023 National Electrical Code.

ACE's scholarships page gives a typical amount of between $500 and $1,000 for Apprenticeship and Trades Scholarships; its application form says $1,000. The form says these limited scholarships support low-income adults living or working in Fairfax County, with a window of November 1 through December 31, 2026 for spring classes in 2027.

Career Outcomes

Students who pass Apprenticeship 101 and all four levels with at least 70% on every module exam, and complete all performance profiles, earn NCCER credentials. ACE says a full program brings a transcript suitable for applying for licensure, and that apprentices who complete the required hours can sit for the journeyman exam.

ACE's two-year schedule covers classes only. Virginia's journeyman exam rule requires practical experience, from one year with a related engineering bachelor's degree to eight years with no formal training. No source says which combination ACE's classes meet.
