Program Overview
East Mississippi Community College offers Electrical Technology through two related awards. The two-semester vocational certificate is offered at Scooba and the Communiversity. The four-semester Associate of Applied Science route is offered at the Communiversity. New students begin this course of study in the fall only. The program says all classes are taught in a laboratory setting. Scooba is at 1512 Kemper Street; the Communiversity is at 7003 South Frontage Road in Columbus.
Curriculum Highlights
The first year covers AC/DC circuits, National Electrical Code applications, residential wiring, electrical drawings and schematics, and electricity fundamentals. It continues with electrical power, manufacturing skills, commercial wiring, motor controls, and branch-circuit and service-entrance calculations. The second year adds fluid power, programmable logic controllers, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, advanced PLCs, and solid-state motor controls. Mathematics, writing, humanities, social science, and oral communication electives accompany the technical courses. This combination spans construction wiring and industrial electrical systems.
Admission Requirements
The program page asks applicants to submit an electronic application, a high school transcript, and an ACT score report. It states that participants need WorkKeys Silver certification or higher before coursework, or an ACT composite of 15. The college’s general admissions checklist says its entrance-exam requirement is waived, while placement testing remains relevant. Because the program page retains its specific threshold, confirm that requirement with the program before enrolling. Official transcripts are part of the admissions process; hand-delivered transcripts must remain sealed. Start with the official admissions checklist. The program contact is Terry Warren at the Communiversity, 662-243-1912, [email protected].
Cost & Financial Aid
The 2026–27 fee sheet lists Electricity at the Communiversity at $2,845 per semester. This flat rate includes tuition, registration, capital-improvement/technology, health, and program fees. Course fees, eBooks, and out-of-state tuition are additional; Communiversity commuters taking at least 12 on-campus hours also pay a $180 food-service balance fee. This price is labeled for the Communiversity and is not a verified Scooba certificate price. The admissions checklist directs students to federal and state aid and EMCC scholarships; individual eligibility must be established separately.
Career Outcomes
The program identifies construction electrician, industrial maintenance technician, PLC programmer, residential wiring technician, and electrician’s helper as related career paths. Students learn to plan, install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems. Award choice matters: the certificate ends after two semesters, while the Communiversity degree continues into advanced controls and additional general education.
