Program Structure
Detroit Electrical Industry Training Center offers a five-year Inside Construction Wireman apprenticeship with 8,000 hours in the field. Apprentices work for signatory electrical contractors on commercial and industrial construction and attend an eight-hour school day every other week. Online homework accompanies classroom and hands-on instruction at 2277 E 11 Mile Road, Suite 1, in Warren.
This is the inside construction route, distinct from the center’s residential and sound/communications programs. The sponsor describes this specific track as federally registered. Classroom education is funded through the IBEW Local 58 and Southeastern Michigan NECA partnership, but participants still have expenses. Work locations and shifts vary, and weekday or weekend overtime can occur.
Requirements
The current application instructions and FAQ require applicants to be at least 17, have graduated from high school or completed a GED, and have successfully completed one year of algebra. Prepare transcripts and evidence of work, military or technical experience for the Personal Experience Form. Applicants take an aptitude test and receive a ranking; meeting the requirements does not guarantee selection.
You need photo identification at testing and reliable transportation to the training center and assigned job sites after acceptance. Homework requires computer and internet access; the center can provide access when unavailable elsewhere. An offer is subject to drug screening and an entry physical, with physical restrictions considered individually.
Application Process
The application portal was closed when checked September 8, 2026. The center says application dates will be announced in 2027; no confirmed opening dates are shown here. Create the required account at least one week before an announced application period and initiate the application only when the portal opens.
The inside-program processing fee is $50 and nonrefundable. Follow the subsequent GAN instructions for the experience form and documents. What You Earn
Apprentices receive wages and benefits, with wage progression tied to program requirements. A dated wage schedule was not established, so no current hourly amount is quoted.
The FAQ does not provide an inside-program tuition/books total; tuition is collected through payroll deductions. Estimated starter tool kits are $300–$500, boots $100–$150, and work apparel $150–$250. Additional job-required items may be needed. Ask for the current tuition schedule and complete expense list before accepting; subsidized training does not mean free training.
