Program Structure
Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Trust offers an Inside Wireman route combining paid contractor employment with classroom training. Its standards require at least 8,000 supervised work hours and 280 classroom hours per training session. Completion typically takes five years, with discretion to schedule the required material over a shorter period.
This route is separate from linework, telecommunications, residential wireman and tree-trimmer training. AJEATT assigns apprentices to employers across Alaska; travel may be required. The Anchorage office is at 5800 B Street. Confirm your regional training location and block-class schedule before arranging travel or housing.
Requirements
Applicants need a diploma or state-issued GED, a valid driver's license and qualifying mathematics. Accepted math routes include Algebra I with C or better, passing post-high-school algebra, SkillsPrep Tech Math or Alaska WorkKeys math at six or higher. Applicants must be 18 at selection. Supply official education records, math documentation and a full driving record obtained within 90 days of application.
The March 2026 policy requires apprentices registered after June 25, 2025 to have an Alaska driver's license REAL ID or valid passport before first dispatch. Wireman apprentices generally need a CDL-A permit and Medical Examiner Certificate by 2,000 work hours or completion of their first class session, and a full CDL-A before 3,000 work hours. Geographically indentured Kodiak Island and Unit 104 wireman apprentices are exempt from those CDL requirements.
New apprentices who do not take or pass the math pretest must complete Tech Math at their own expense within 60 days of registration; remote assignments may affect timing. Application Process
Applications for Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Ketchikan are accepted year-round. Quarterly deadlines are March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31; other local opportunities depend on regional openings. Pay the $25 application fee and submit the required records.
Qualified applicants receive interview instructions and are ranked for selection as positions become available. Selected applicants must respond within 48 hours, then complete prompt drug screening and orientation. Some veterans or experienced applicants may qualify for alternative interview consideration. What You Earn
AJEATT arranges paid contractor assignments, but apprentices receive no pay while attending school. The sponsor covers training costs while apprentices pay for books and computer-based modules.
