Program Overview
Lansing Community College's Utility and Energy Systems program area lists two construction-relevant electrical awards: the Electrical Technology Associate in Applied Science and the Electrical Technology - Construction Certificate of Achievement. Both curriculum guides list an effective window that runs through 2031. The certificate guide directs questions to the Electrical Technology Program in the West Campus Building, and LCC's West Campus is at 5708 Cornerstone Drive in Lansing. The program page lists the format for both awards as online, in person and hybrid, so ask which courses require campus labs.
Curriculum Highlights
The certificate gives a background in applied electrical theory and the basic mechanical skills a practicing construction electrician needs. Required courses include practical electricity, basic wiring installation, electrical mathematics, machine controls, National Electrical Code I and II, electrical prints for buildings, electric motor maintenance, general industry safety, fire alarms and IoT and automation fundamentals, plus framing or drafting. It requires at least 40.5 credits, or 50.5 billing hours, over a recommended four-semester sequence. The degree lets students choose a construction, automation and control, or power generation subspecialty and requires at least 67.5 credits, or 85.5 billing hours, including general education in math and English. Both awards treat Practical Electricity, with a grade of 2.0 or higher, as the key milestone course.
Admission Requirements
LCC is an open enrollment college. Applicants who want financial aid must have a high school diploma or GED. Students apply to LCC, then work with an advisor and Degree Works to plan the required courses. The certificate requires a minimum grade of 2.0 in every course.
Cost & Financial Aid
LCC charges tuition by billing hour rather than credit hour, because billing hours reflect time in contact with instructors and lab equipment. Rates are $122 per billing hour for in-district residents, $244 for other Michigan residents and $366 for out-of-state students. LCC also charges a $25 registration fee each semester and a $15 student support fee per billable hour. The certificate requires at least 50.5 billing hours and the degree at least 85.5, so ask LCC for an estimate based on your residency.
Career Outcomes
LCC describes construction electricians as the workers who install power wiring in homes, stores, offices, schools and industrial facilities, and its certificate is aimed at that work. The certificate and degree are college awards; they are not electrician licenses, and LCC's career figures are estimates rather than guarantees of employment.
